The competition between these two fast food giants is not limited to food alone.
Jollibee released a series of heartbreaking commercials just in time for Valentine’s Day. Romantics promptly shared the tear-jerkers on Facebook, and they went viral within hours. We were pretty impressed, too!
One of the videos is called “Vow.” Spoiler alert: It’s a love story that didn’t happen between best friends who first met in Jollibee.
The guy immediately fell in love with the girl after they ordered the same thing: Chicken Joy, extra rice, and pineapple juice. Eventually, the girl married another man, but as the hero of the story said, “I want you to be the happiest girl in the world, even if we didn’t end up together.”
So, you’re planning to spend the weekend getting ahead on next week’s workload. A crucial piece of advice: Don’t. Weekends are made for relaxation!
We’ve got a splendid suggestion for you: Head to Crimson Hotel Alabang Deck Bar, where there’s a ‘Weekend BBQ Delight’ offering all you can eat barbecue and all you can drink beer for just PHP899++.
Executive Chef Martin Bower says that the grilled seafood is a must try. If you want to get bang for your money, the slipper lobsters are the way to go. The buffet includes BBQ chicken, beef medallions, sausages, shrimps, vegetables and more.
Four people died and more than 100 were injured after a powerful earthquake struck the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines late Friday, damaging some structures and cutting power in many areas, local officials said.
The 6.7 earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km and the epicentre was about 13 km east of the city of Surigao, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said there was no tsunami threat from the earthquake.
Renato Solidum, head of the Philippines' seismic agency, said on radio on Saturday morning 89 aftershocks had been recorded and more could be expected but they were unlikely to cause significant damage.
Friday's quake was the strongest since the city was rocked by a 6.9 quake in 1879, Solidum said.
This week, Jollibee gave us a rollercoaster ride of emotions with their 'Kwentong Valentine's' (Valentine's Stories) ads.
They broke our hearts with their unexpected plot twist in "Vow", then they made us believe in true love with "Crush", and on Fri, Feb 10, Filipinos cried buckets of tears after Jollibee — the country's favorite bee — had us crying buckets of tears (not Chickenjoy) with their third Valentine's ad called "Date".
Just watch it for yourself and we dare you to not shed a single tear.
A veteran US foreign policy adviser and a leading Filipino-American senator have expressed optimism on the resurgence of the US-Philippines relationship, calling the strained relations a "momentary phenomenon" that will eventually be hurdled by the two nations.
Charles Salmon, a former US foreign policy adviser to the commander-in-chief of the US Pacific Command, said the relationship between the two countries will remain strong and steady despite President Rodrigo Duterte's harsh rhetoric and uncertainties on President Donald Trump's foreign policy.
"I dont think there will be any fundamental change in the basic realization on the Philippines' part and (the US) part, that our bilateral relationship remains important and will continue to be important, and that we're going to continue to work together for stability in the Asia-Pacific," Salmon said.
Painter and art teacher Yasmin “Jigs” Almonte isn’t called a survivor by friends for nothing. She has gone past the pain of cancer that claimed part of her jaw and prevailed over other physical and psychological challenges. If there’s a song to describe her, it may be ABBA’s “The Winner Takes It All” because she has the mind-set, determination and tenacity of a winner.
In her ongoing 20th solo show, “My Garden,” at Sining Kamalig, Almonte celebrates her 60th birthday by showing 60 paintings of flowers done in acrylic on 400gsm heavy acrylic paper. Like the cockeyed optimist that she is, she said, “After all is said and done, my life is still a bed of flowers.”

Michelin Starred chef Heston Blumenthal made a super quick stop in Manila this weekend.
And by "super quick," we mean two hours.
According to Besay Gonzalez, general manager of Txanton — the first and only jamoneria in the country, Blumenthal dropped by their store for two hours on Fri (Feb 10) night.
The legendary British chef enjoyed exquisite wine (Botega Tradicion) and premium jamon at Txanton and rushed off to catch his flight out of the country.
Actress Liza Soberano, considered one of the prettiest faces in local showbiz, hopes people start to look past her spellbinding beauty and focus on her talent.
In a bloggers' conference on Friday, the 19-year-old acknowledges that she feels offended when people focus too much on her captivating looks.
"And there are times na kunwari nagpe-perform na ako, I know I'm not the best dancer out there. But then I feel down about what I did during the production, lalapit sila sa akin and say: 'OK lang 'yan, maganda ka naman," Soberano said.
"Sometimes it gets to a point that it starts hurting me na kasi 'yon na lang ang pinapansin and I try so hard to prove that I'm not just that. But still they can't see past that."
Soberano said there's more she can offer than an enchanting face.
President Rodrigo Duterte is set to visit Surigao City on Sunday morning to personally check on the victims of the powerful earthquake that struck the coastal town, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said.
Duterte will meet with some of the victims of the tremor that left 6 people dead and over 100 others injured, DSWD Secretary Judy Taguiwalo told radio DZMM.
Taguiwalo who is currently overseeing relief operations in Surigao, said Duterte will visit the families of those who died and those who were injured in the quake.
The President, she added, is also expected to meet with local officials and check on their disaster response.
Duterte will also supervise the distribution of food packs at the city hall.
It all started in a humble stall at the Legazpi Sunday Market.
Imman Decena still remembers how his mom, Louh Doctora-Decena, and his aunt, Tess Doctora, struggled with their sales from their stall. Not a lot of people know about the wonders of Indonesian food then and most Filipinos weren’t as adventurous as they are now when it comes to trying new food.
Nevertheless, his mom and his aunt persevered.
Eight years later, they sell more than 350 packs of Indonesian boxed lunches at the Legazpi Sunday Market and on November 2016, they opened their own restaurant in foodie haven Kapitolyo in Pasig City.
The earthquake that jolted Surigao del Norte on Friday night jogged the memory of some people on social media, who were saying an incident two days prior could've served as a sign for the disaster that was about to strike.
On Wednesday, a 10-foot-long dead oarfish was caught by fishermen off the coast of Agusan del Norte.
To some, deep-sea creatures such as oarfish that end up in shallow water are a good predictor of earthquakes. How true that is remains very much a debate?
“It’s theoretically possible because when an earthquake occurs there can be a build-up of pressure in the rocks which can lead to electrostatic charges that cause electrically charged ions to be released into the water,” Rachel Grant, a lecturer in animal biology, said in a report posted on the Independent news website in October 2013.
Chalita Suansane is back in the Philippines, and it appears she traveled light this time around.
On Instagram, Thailand's representative to last month's Miss Universe pageant posted a photo of herself with only a single suitcase in tow. It's a sharp contrast to the 17 large bags she brought with her when she arrived in the country for the beauty pageant.
Chalita is in the country as a tourism ambassador for Thailand. She appeared at a travel expo held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.
"I feel so lucky and so happy to be here and meet all my fans. I love everyone," she told ABS-CBN News' MJ Felipe.
Chalita urged Filipinos to visit Thailand and experience its rich culture, long history, natural beauty, and amazing food.
Ateneo de Davao president Fr. Joel Tabora, S.J. said President Rodrigo Duterte might be dismayed to find out that hell, a place Duterte claims he isn't afraid to go to, is filled with drug lords and addicts who have all died from his war on drugs.
“After fighting his war on drugs to rid the Philippines of drug addicts and drug lords, the president may be dismayed to discover that hell is filled with the drug lords and drug addicts who’ve perished in his war — to say nothing of all the selfish rich he’s loathed for making their millions oppressing the poor he loves,” Tabora wrote in a blog post titled “Choosing between Hell with Duterte and Heaven with the CBCP.”

Chicken Sisig Lettuce Wrap at Agos
Chef Tatung's tasty chicken sisig (a lighter sisig alternative, I must admit) served with crispy taro shoelace strips, shredded purple cabbage, and fresh lettuce. The savory experience is heightened with their mango sauce. A treat for the eyes and tastebuds.
Before anything else, let’s get one thing straight: we’re not talking about a teeny-tiny pearl here — this one weighs 81.5 pounds and has an estimated value of USD130 million.
An unbelievalbly huge clam pearl was shipped out of the Philippines without the permission of the National Museum (NM) in what could be the “the biggest case of cultural-property smuggling in the country.”
The pearl was reportedly “owned” by a Filipino missionary Gloria Huetter, who refused to disclose the exact location where the treasure was found. She reportedly planned to sell the pearl for the benefit of poor Filipinos.
Huetter's pearl is much bigger than the pearl found by a fisherman in Palawan last year. It could actually be the biggest one in the world.
Proving that his footwear obsession has no limits, “Catwalk King” Sinon Loresca was caught on video attempting to shoot some hoops… in sky-high heels, of course.
Before you question his workout attire of choice, watch the video and look at how much fun he was having! No one in ordinary basketball shoes has screamed that much while playing.
Vice Ganda’s brand of humor is nasty. But though he may be appear like a big bully on screen, he’s a softie who’s always looking out for his squad.
The 40-year-old comedian, whose real name is Jose Marie Visceral, opened up about how he fired his close friend Negi from the weekly comedy show “Gandang Gabi Vice (GGV)” for drug use.
Speaking on the ABS-CBN’s “Magandang Buhay,” he said that Negi (Uldario Molina Jr.) started using drugs as he got his taste of success in the biz. Vice felt that he needed to intervene.
The concerned friend threatened to remove Negi from GGV and kill his showbiz career altogether.
Manny Pacquiao on Monday asked his legions of Twitter followers to choose his opponent after announcing his next world title defence will be in the United Arab Emirates.
"See you in UAE for my next fight. #TeamPacquiao" the WBO world welterweight champion tweeted, appearing to scupper reports that he would next fight Australia's Jeff Horn in Brisbane in April.
Pacquiao then posted a poll on his official Twitter feed asking his 108,000 followers to choose either Horn, Terence Crawford, Amir Khan or Kell Brook as his next opponent in the UAE.
The poll had received more than 10,000 votes by Monday morning.
A spokesman for Pacquiao told AFP he was due to meet his manager Michael Koncz later Monday and a statement about his next fight would be issued.
It’s sweet, creepy and funny all at the same time — perfect if you’re trying to send someone mixed signals.
Saint Jo Flower Shop in Market Market has released an interesting line of Valentine’s day flower bouquets, which look like cute versions of sympathy flowers often seen during wakes and funerals.
What makes them really special are the witty one-liners… all with a subtle reference to death.
When you’re planning a crime, make sure you’re texting the right number.
A 42-year-old father in Washington state has been arrested after his murder plan was mistakenly sent to the wrong person.
The suspect (JL) sent messages intended for a hitman named “Shayne” to his former boss, who promptly alerted the authorities about JL’s plot to kill his wife and four-year-old daughter for life insurance money.
"Hey Shayne how’s it going. You remember you said that you would help me kill my wife. I'm going to take you up on that offer," JL allegedly said as reported by KIRO7.
The suspect suggested to make it look like an accident or a robbery gone wrong. He promised to split the USD 1 million insurance money with the hitman.
A representative of the United Nations children’s agency in the Philippines said that the proposal to lower the minimum age of criminal liability (MACL) from 15 to nine is “wrong from every angle.”
Lowering the MACL is the pet project of House speaker Pantaleon Alvarez. Earlier this month, he said that Cabinet secretaries of national agencies who are against his proposal should just resign.
“Apart from the fact that it’s against human rights, it’s very unfair to a child, to punish them in such a harsh way as the criminal system would be, for something that they never understood was that serious,” said Unicef’s country representative, Lotta Sylwander in a report by UK newspaper, The Guardian.
A depressed woman from Consolacion, Cebu set her house on fire on Mon, Feb 13, after her American live-in partner left her.
30-year old Noraiza Alonzo attempted to burn down her two-storey house at 3 am, but her neighbors were able to stop her. She eventually succeeded on her second try at 6 am.
According to Consolacion Fire investigator SFO1 Tyrone Gocela, Alonzo gathered light materials inside her bathroom and created a fire. She also left her LPG tank open, ABS-CBN News reports.
Two other houses were damaged by the incident, but they were able to put out the blaze.
40-year-old actor Piolo Pascual, who we all lovingly call Papa P, opened up about the details of his lovelife just before Valentine’s Day. He admitted that he and 26-year-old actress Shaina Magdayao have been exclusively dating for the last 5 years. Yup, half a decade!
Like many modern couples, they’re not fans of labeling their relationship, but Piolo said that they have something they value.
"Whatever it is, I guess we just have to mutually respect everyone involved and not to talk more about it. Kasi ang hirap diba nagkaka-edad na (Because it's so hard, right, that it's getting old) I’ve been with her 5 years na, exclusively dating,” Piolo said in a report by PEP.PH
(Update: The album has been deleted from the pageant's FB page)
This was clearly an attempt to spread the word about the human cost of the government’s war against drugs, but we’re not sure if it’s sending the right message.
The Facebook page of a pageant organized by a university in Manila uploaded an album from a photoshoot inspired by "extrajudicial killings.”
Wrap your head around that for a moment.
“The candidates of Mr. and Ms. Engineering 2017 flaunt their flaws this EJK- Themed Photoshoot,” the album was captioned.
Some of the men played dead. Some of the ladies wrapped their bodies in packaging tape.
